Red Riding Hood Book Site Launched

If you read the Red Riding Hood by Sarah Blakley-Cartwright, you may have found the end to be slightly lacking. After the final pages of the story, there is a message to the reader: "Is this truly the end of Valerie's story?"

A website is provided to "find out" if it was truly the end, but was unavailable until yesterday. The site has launched with the message "Still believe in happy endings? Check back soon for the final chapter."

UPDATE: According to an article from Publisher's Weekly, the final "bonus chapter" will be available after the film's release.

"Readers will also have access to what Stein calls “an extra bonus”: a final chapter to Red Riding Hood that will be available free online (at http://redridinghoodbook.com/) after the film’s release. “The story is a whodunit, with lots of wonderful red herrings, and with every chapter readers are led to think someone else is the werewolf,” she says. “The novel has a great ending as it is, but there’s an extra surprise in the online bonus chapter.”"

  1. I will not be seing this movie until I get the end of the book! I was excited to see this film but I always read the books first if they are available. Now I have spent time reading this book only to not get an ending? Really people? This is not the way to gain fans!

  3. I am so glad I spent money on a book that is not finished. We should all get a free finished copy or our money back.It was also great how the front and back didn't say anything about this.

  4. Great book... I liked the ending! Getting an extra ending will be icing on the cake! Quit complaining!!!

  6. I finished this book, in two days, it was so good. But I will have to say I was like "what the heck?" about the ending, but then seen the thing about "is it truly the end of valerie's story?" so I went to the website (I will add a lot of people wont bother with going to websites) but wasn't really understanding what the count down was all about, I mean I know it said another chapter revealed or whatever, but I just wasn't sure if it was for the movie, meaning that, that was the last chapter and all our questions from the book would be answered once we seen the movie. So I had to google search a little until I clicked on this website. Now understanding whats going on, I'm happy that there is a much better ending to our questions, but also a little sad that both the movie and last chapter will be coming out on the same day, so I'm going to have to stay up until 12:00 am and get that last chapter so i can go see the movie the same day. I will say that the writing was great and I loved how red riding hood was made into more then just a fairytale story and brought into a world of suspense, romance, action and gore. Who ever said that Red riding hoods story was ever pleasant anyways?
Good job on the book I loved it!

  7. I'm not really happy at this point. I read this book in a day to find out who the Wolf was... very disappointed!!! I'm not sure now if I'm happy or mad about my purchase of this book. Maybe I should have just waited on the movie and called it a day.

  8. Not happy with the ending either! What a waste of my time... My friends were interested in reading this book. Will not waste their time.. just see the movie. Not a good marketing move!

  9. All I have to say is Lame-o!!!!!
I really enjoyed this book until I got to the irritating "bonus chapter". In a way it ruined the entire experience...

  10. i loved the book but really what was up with not puting the "bonus" chapter in with the rest of the book. i should just wait for the movie to come out. i was so excited to read the book and now i have to wait til the day the movie comes out to read the last chapter of the book.the movie also comes out on a week day and people are goiing to forget about the last chapter and just go and see the movie. why bother with the books last chapter when you can go and see the movie.

  11. I am annoyed! This is a cheap marketing trick to make us all see the film. I have never felt so played in all my life.

  12. The first 100 pages were a bore. I had to remind myself many times this will get better. I flipped to the end of the book while reading chapter 26 and realized there is no way the author can end the tale in 20 pages. This is when I saw"visit redridinghoodbook to see what happens to Valerie next. This book isn't good enough to have a sequel. I picked it up only because I enjoy the actress that will star as Valerie( she rocks in the hbo series big love) and hardwicke directed. What a waste.

  13. I guess Ten dollar books don't have endings.

  14. Thanks for causing me to waste money on a book you didn't bother to finish. I agree with someone else who posted. We should be able to get a FREE copy of the complete book, since we were screwed out of the ending. (Oh, and I definitely WILL NOT be going to see the movie now. Thanks for nothing)

  15. I feared to write a comment at the risk of sounding like a spoiled child that didn't get that delicious cookie it wanted.
However. :Sigh: I find myself after forcing down "The Wolf" inside me slowly relising that this really keeps that delicious suspense going.

Never the less it had better be one good cookie!

Seriously though..I loved the book, it was surprisingly warm and oddly enough..familiar. It reminded me of some far off child hood feeling from when I was little. Though I was always afraid of the fable Little red riding hood until I got older.

Any way briilliant adaptation all around.

    What..great..talent..you have!

    Cheers

  17. I don't usually post things that I have an issue with...but this I do. I am an avid reader, and don't much like going to the movies. The fact that I purchased a book with the intention of finishing it only to find out that I have to DOWNLOAD the rest of the book is appalling to me. I understand that it was a marketing technique, and that the book was written off of a script (mind you the writer did a GLORIOUS job with the part of the book I was able to read), but using the end of a book to "make" people watch a movie, or wait until it is released online is a big disappointment.

I purchase books very frequently and finished this one in around 2 days. Yes, this book was priced under $10, but all of the books I purchase are. Yes, the writer did a wonderful job of working with the material that she had. Yes, it was a wonderful read, but where is the rest. I do not believe that I am expected to sit in front of my computer to read the last chapter or two of a book I have already purchased. I agree with the others that we should be either given the rest of the book as an extension or at least given the option to purchase it at a VERY DISCOUNTED rate. I am not happy with the ending of the book and still have 12 days until I will be able to read the ending, not from my comfy recliner though.

I hope that Poppy, Little Brown & Company, Hachette, and Warner Bros have made their money on me, as I will most definitely be checking the endings of the books that are motion pictures from now on to make sure they are full books.

    Off my soapbox now...I promise.

  18. I loved the ending and now I get to see the movie without it really being ruined for me

    ReplyDelete
  19. Um, not okay....you pay for a book to get the ENTIRE thing...not a fricken oh wait look us up online and THEN you can have the ending.BUT oh wait! you have to wait for the movie...great awesome! cause i wanted to wait for the movie, ya know that is why i bought the book so i could wait ... good book..but that ending kinda just lost itself a fan. Really disappointed in this.

  20. Its not okay to get people to buy the book and not give the real ending.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I love to read....a complete book! How frustrating! I was immersed in this well written book, enjoying the "who is it" ride! Now the breaks are on and I think I have whiplash!! Can I sue?

    ReplyDelete
  22. The book was great, the ending.....I want it in another whole book expanding the story more. Not just a chapter online. I use a public computer and not one of my own so there is no way I can download this supposed chapter....I highly doubt this is an author I will buy another story from.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I was pretty much the epitome of furious last night when I stayed up late to finish the book. This whole online chapter is bullsh*t, and I agree with whoever said we should get books with the full story or our money back. Worst book I've ever read.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Blah blah blah. You have to give credit for the ingenuity. It was still a great read and I'll still pay for my movie ticket without complaining! Live a little people!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I just think it's annoying! You've already decided to see the movie or not, so what difference is it going to make if you get to read the ending, like it's going to be in the movie, or make us wait?? Just a another ridiculous marketing strategy. I won't see the movie until I read the end of the book....I wonder if this whole scheme will end up hurting their opening weekend numbers...doesn't seem like a good idea to annoy the fans/readers...

    ReplyDelete
  26. Very disappointed....I'm already excited about seeing the movie...then I found the book. It was a little slow in the beginning but about half way through I really got into it. I was up until 2am this morning finishing it....only to find that now I have to wait for the ending....which is crap! So...I've only bought half a book? With the economy the way it is...now I've wasted money on a book I wouldn't recommend to anyone. The book is good enough that you could have added the ending and we would all have gone to see the movie too, AND we would be bragging about what a good book we just read instead of complaining because of the time we wasted reading it.
I'll go to see the movie but only because I was going to anyway...what will I do with the book??? I usually keep them to read again later....but I already know I won't be reading it again...give it to a friend? Of course not...who wants to give away only half a book? Recommend it to someone? Heck no! BUT you got your money from the sale...so...I guess that is what is important to you...

  32. I'm sorry that an update on this post has an incorrect date. The post was updated over a month ago with information provided by another source. I will correct that, but the book's site does have the correct date of March 14th.

  33. it wasted my money and my time and whats up with the "bouns" chapter?

    ReplyDelete
  34. I paid for a book around $10 just for a book that has NO ending? That's what happened to me a month ago. When I got to Books-a-million I ran into this book. I was debating this book and Great Expectations by Charles Dickens (Mind you I'm a 18 year old dude who LOVES to read) and I had no idea there was a book about this new film so I couldn't go to amazon and see the reviews about it since most are nonspoiler and give me an idea if it was worth to buy it. Didn't have that option. I was blind-sided and this book tackled me down and stolen my money for I paid for a book to read ALL the way since I don't make it to the theater often and didn't really plan to go and see it opening day. Was I pissed? Yeah I was. I paid for an incomplete book with an ending that is FREE FOR EVERY LIVING HUMAN WHO HAS THE INTERNET!!! FREE!?!?!? Why should I pay for something that is free? If it is the ending they are trying to "preserve" THEN WHY MAKE IT F**N FREE I BEG YOU! But to bad I went with my intuition to buy this book over another book that was cheaper and better WITH an ending trying that is not following some stupid "marketing" idea. This "bonus" chapter is complete bull crap. Thank goodness the movie met it's match: Mistress karma today. Heard it SUCKED and despite the trailers it WAS meant to be a "Twilight" knock-off.

  35. You have a lot of complaints but I thought this was so much fun I hadn't looked at the website before I saw the movie and the movies ending was such an amazing surprise I loved watching a movie to get the ending of a book such a great idea you have me as a fan

    ReplyDelete
  36. What a waste of time! I agree with the others-who wants to buy a book with no ending? I will not be encouraging my friends to waste their money on an unfinished book!

  37. I read the book. It is truly magical. Today is the 14th, I am up at 12:16 a.m. and the bonus chapter is NOT up. Very mad tired person you don't wanna mess with. :p

  44. OMG!!!! no ending, really!i read this book in two days to finally read the ending and there was nothing! i go to the site it told me to go to and yet it sill wont let me read the final chapter! i waitied to see the movie until i finished the book, finished the book??? where is the ending!

    ReplyDelete
  45. HMMMM - still no bonus chapter posted....
For those who saw the movie - is it as bad as I've heard??
For those who didn't see it - are you waiting for the bonus chapter or skipping it altogether out of principal??
    Just curious!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I just read the final chapter and it still seems like a very incomplete ending, but I don't see how they can make a sequel... There doesn't seem to be enough of a storyline to warrant a sequel. It just feels incomplete... The book itself is not a terrible read. I enjoyed the book, but I am not sure how good the movie could possibly be. I don't find the book to be movie worthy. However, I will watch the movie just so I can compare the two...

    ReplyDelete
  47. Ok, so we all waited for the bonus chapter, I found out about a bonus chapter and decided to read the whole book the day it came out. So I stayed up til 12am reading it. Hoping to just pull up the internet and read the final chapter. I stayed up til 3am, followed by giving up, waking up at 7, no chapter, checked at 9am, no chapter, checked at 10:20am, finally!
The book was amazing! The story well written, slow for the first half but got better halfway through and really escalated to a thrilling and unexpected ending! The idea to put the final chapter online gave me mixed feelings. I understand the idea which as inovative as it was, yet was it necessary? I'm not sure. However, the bonus/final chapter was well worth the wait! My only complaint is that the website/chapter should have been up for download at midnight on March 14th not 10:20am. That being said, I will see the movie, read the book and recommend it now that the final chapter is out. But if I had to wait like most people, I would be highly upset myself. Now I'm hoping that the book will be re-released or up for grabs for those who already bought it including the final ending.
Overall, go check it out and enjoy it!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I loved the book. Absolutely loved it. I was a little upset not having the bonus chapter right away but I just read it and it was definitely worth waiting for. Now I can officially go see the movie!! <3

  49. I really liked the book! I hate not knowing for 100% suuure who the wolf is. lol It kills me a little inside. For some reason I never get out to the movies, so I am going to be reading that chapter right when I get home to my own computer... although I have this feeling like it won't suppress my anxious feelings...but make them worse. XD

    1. This movie is great I loved it and im twelve But i love scary movies there were a few parts that try to scare you but dont really my mom and i didnt even jump. Its kind of like twilight but with more of atwist im planning on reading the book as well.

      Delete
  55. No word yet if there will be a reprint of the novel with the final chapter.

The movie has a few good scares and creepy moments, but nothing that would give you nightmares. It is not romantically driven, like Twilight, but there is a good balance of mystery and romance.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Anyone else confused about the last few lines in the book saying that if Peter was a wolf then she would be one too, but when you read the "bonus chapter" (in my case weeks later) all the sudden she is stabbing Peter? Huh? Also I thought Henry only had eyes for Valerie but the bonus chapter said that he asked for Lucie's hand first. There is just not enough in the book for me to figure out any of the characters. Very incomplete and bare writing!

    ReplyDelete
  57. omg just finished reading the bonus chapter it was awesome and sad and thrilling!!! The author finally tells you the wolf is and it was awesome

    ReplyDelete
  58. is this book really this good? I really want to read it im planning on buying it this weekend and then im seeing the film in 2 weeks I'm planning to see this movie in 2 weeks with my friend! its going to be awesome (i hope)

  59. When I saw the trailer of the movi, and Catherin Harwick's name I thougth "new twilight franchice, but with a wolf" so I wasn't that interested just curious to know if maybe y was wrong, I mean if it would've been alot like twilight it would be a realy bad move, but the trailer gave the idea of forbiden love (because of differences of species) one good the other bad good not carring being able to see good on bad. So I bought the book to find out if I was wrong without having to risk to pay for a bad movie (wich I was going to see only once) I read the first 3 chapters the first one was exiting and kept me interested, but then I started to fall asleep, I scanned thrugh the other pages and no action, so next day I returned the book got my money back, whent to the library and checked it out. Curiosity was the only thing that kept me reading (who is 'The Wolf') most of the book was bla, bla, bla. And the I reach the part of "you've been cheated... you wont know who The Wolf is until the movie is out... ja,ja,ja" the point of buying the BOOK is because I wanted to know the whole story, and the go see it in thearer, if the movie makers didn't want us too know the ending that why make a book at all. I wasn't too mad thogh because I didn't waste money on the book, and as for the movie I'll just wait to dvd and rent it.

  62. OK. I don't know who's STUPID idea it was to not finish the book ending, but lets give ya'll a hint-

    IT WAS STUPID.

NO ONE PAYS GOOD MONEY FOR A BOOK WITH NO F**KING ENDING.

As an avid reader I will advise everyone (Know matter how well written the book was.) that I suggest they save their time and money and NOT read the book OR see the movie.

This publishing company will also loose my buisness. Poppy? Poppy Publing?

Guess what -I don't care if the next Harry Potter series is written by this publishing company.

I will not be buying again.

I know this seems harsh, but like I said, No one wants to pay good money--IN a recesssion no less- to get a book with a missing a chapter.

Thanks for Nothing. Especially since the last chapter can't be downloaded on most computers apperntly.

Thanks for wasting my $9.99 plus tax.

  66. Hey, I'm not disappointed that I got the book but the ending leaves you hanging. I didn't like the ending until I read the bonus chapter. I must say that the bonus chapter tied the book together very well. The begining of the book till the end keeps you guessing the big question, "WHO IS THE WOLF?"!!!! Altogether I thought it was well written and very good. Now I want to see the movie!!! Can't wait.

  68. I thought that the books ending was fine as it was. The extra chapter, though was pointless. Subtle hints in the would have been a better idea, then figuring out who the wolf was.

  71. I am a freelance illustrator and I worked on the cover of this book with Poppy/Hachette. I was commissioned to create the wraparound illustration for the jacket, and it was so much fun to work on.

I CANNOT wait to see the film. Things get to Australia a little slow. I just saw a bill board for it a few days ago.

I would love to see more and more of these adaptations in the future. Fairy and folk tales are so rich, and so fun.

  72. @craig Phillips,
your cover is the best part of this book!
i bought it because of the artwork. As far as 10$ books go i thought this one was better than expected.I read the bonus chapter and it only confirmed what i had already guessed.Im surprised at how many people are complaining about spending 10$ on a book.(thats VERY cheap for a book) where i live that is way cheaper than a movie.well i guess i cant please everyone!

  74. Great book, really want to know who the wolf is!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Once I read the bonus chapter, I coulden't believe who the wolf actually was!

    ReplyDelete
  76. I think everyone needs to grow up and stop acting like children throwing their toys out of their prams!! All of those people who are complaining... Did you read the Intro? Did you know that this story was a film first... and that the director wanted it to be made into a book to elaborate on some of the relationships and emotions that the chracters went through?! If they had published the ending to the story they would have ruinied their film!!! I liked the idea.. I prefer to read books before seeing the movies, and for that reason i thought this was an ingenious idea because i still got to see the film and be surprised by the ending! I never woked out who the wolf was, i was convinced i'd got it all worked out!!
So get a life and just enjoy the story!! To anyone reading this I recommend both reading the book and watching the movie, i thought both were brilliant!!!

    ReplyDelete
  77. i like the book ending just the way it is...better to leave the readers come to their own conclusions. i was a bit disappointed in the online bonus chapter. but it's all good as long as val and peter end up together, right? looking forward to seeing the movie now. it's all fun!

    ReplyDelete
  78. is there going to be a seqel to the bonus chapter because itd be cool if they wrote about the next generation (of werewolves if she has children) or something <3

  80. This book needs a sequel. Once I reached the middle, I had so much trouble putting it down. To those who did not like it, I strongly question your sanity, but I suppose everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Please, make a Red Riding Hood 2. You are an amazing story teller and you kept me utterly hooked. One of the best books I have read in a VERY long time.

  82. Oh come on people suck it up. I finished the book in a few hours then went to the website as soon as I possibly could. You already waited for the book itself and its not like its costing you a freaking dime to type in a url instead of complaining about it on here.

  84. BULLSHIT. Only money-hungry jackals sell a book with a piss-poor incomplete and unsatisfying ending. This is the first time I have EVER had to admit that the movie was better than the book, and that is because catherine hardwicke must have seen personally to the book being a bullshit bust. I saw the movie first, so I didn't get the suspensful disappointment....but I am disappointed in the fact that I was sold an incomplete story, turing a beautiful fairy tale into a bullshit money-hungry scheme. They have lost my devotion and appeal.

    One of many.

  91. Ok, I'm ok... I'm not going to freak out... Why would I freak out?!.. Oh yeah, wait a second... I spent an entire day absolutely loving a book that kept me on my feet guessing and trying to work out every last detail, and, where's the last detail? On some website!!! But, I'm over it...

I would read it again, but I physically can't!

But I will admit, I did love what was there of the book!

P.S My browser won't even let me read the bonus chapter... HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO READ IT NOW!!!!!!!!!

    :(

  92. right after i finished this book i went to the web site to say hay why is there no part four ?????????????????????? And i was going to say you need to ethier re publish the book with the added end or make a sequal but i also thought it would be good but it mit over do it if you make a series of it. but this book was so thrilling so overwellming so ierrisitable that i most enjoyed the book on the hot and humid patieo i live in floida and we are in the middle of a heat wave i love peter and valerie but if i was a little bit older i might marry peter but it would be more thrilling to just have a unknow kinda long disstens {somtimes} relashanship with him he sonds like the most perfect guy ever for me if only i was valerie i mean i was so into the book that i was sitting there the wohle time and a big group of deer came and was eating out of the corn feeder for like an hour and wouldent even have noteced if my mom hadent come out and said awe arent the deer soooooooooooooo cute and i feel bad for henery how he wittness what he did ecspeshihaly because it was beteew the girl he love and guy that he hated because he father killed his mother but it did get a little bit better for him in the end but wenever valerie and peter were together and rely close together ;} was a amzing part of the book though at the end in the bounus chapter while the wolf was telling valerie who it was i acualy lost a lot of interest it seem like that flaming spark of the book just died down

WELLL I WOULD GO ON AND I WILLL ADD TO THIS LATER LET ME GET TO THE POINT MAN WHY DOSE IT TAKE ME SO LONG TO POINT ARRRG FOUCSE SYDNEY WHY AM I EVEN WRITING THIS AAAAA WATEREVER THIS BOOK WAS AMAZING THE END FOR NOW
